A Brief History
First launched in 1992, Dorset Art Weeks originated from a suggestion by furniture maker John Makepeace to county librarian Carl Earl. The event was then developed by Joanna Morland, the county's visual arts officer, who formed a steering group. In its inaugural year, the list of venues was published on a single A2 sheet.
Today, Dorset Art Weeks stands as the largest visual arts event in Dorset, attracting over 500 participating artists and makers. The collective spirit of artists and makers, eager to showcase the best of the county's visual arts, was evident from the start and continues to thrive.
Dorset Art Weeks, traditionally a biennial event, will now be held annually for 16 days starting in 2026. This shift provides increased opportunities for Dorset's creative community, building upon the achievements made since 1992. Dorset Art Weeks and its creative community continue to thrive and evolve, with artists and makers keen to engage with those curious to explore Dorset and learn about the creative journey.
