DORSET ART WEEKS 2022 (14-29 MAY)

DORSET ART WEEKS 2022 DIRECTORY • 7 Welcome to Dorset Art Weeks 2022 It is thirty years since the first Dorset Art Weeks was launched in 1992. In that first year, the list of venues was published on a single sheet of A2 paper but as with 2022, the collective spirit of artists and makers wanting to showcase the best of the county’s visual arts was more than apparent. The origin of Dorset Art Weeks came from an initial suggestion by John Makepeace, to the county librarian, Carl Earl, and developed by the county’s visual arts officer, Joanna Morland, who formed a steering group for the event. The intense collaborative energy of artists and craftspeople creating work, opening studios and organising group shows continues. After the past couple of years, Dorset Art Weeks, and the creative community which sustains it, continues to thrive and evolve - something to be celebrated! This year’s event follows on from last year’s rescheduled event. Visitors to Dorset Art Weeks 2022 can look forward to re- discovering an exciting variety of artist studios and exhibitions in unique locations and beautiful settings, and finding out what the county’s creatives have been up to during such an extraordinary time. There’s a huge amount to see this year with over 250 venues taking part, and more ways than ever to engage with the event, including open studios, public art trails and group shows from a vibrant community of artists, galleries and public spaces. Use this Directory in conjunction with the DAW website and DAW App (see QR code below), with all of the information needed to plan your venue visits, create an art trail and discover more about the county’s artists, curators and galleries, including special exhibitions and activities which will feature in this year’s event. For 2022, the event reverts to six regions to help audiences navigate local areas. Some artists will welcome visits by appointment, and in some instances after the event has finished too - so if you can’t make it to see someone during the 16 days, it may be worth checking with the artist afterwards. As artists respond to the distinctiveness of their local areas and the places which inspire their work, Dorset Art Weeks provides a unique way to make the most of Dorset's stunning countryside and coast and what it has to offer, and to discover the unexpected. Look out for the Dorset Art Weeks signs popping up across the county and pointing towards a great day out. With so much to see and do, it's the perfect blend of art, food and travel, with some venues providing refreshments, along with headline sponsor Hall & Woodhouse offering warm hospitality at their stunning pubs around the county. All venues will continue to take measures to ensure continued safety at this time. After a challenging couple of years, artists look forward to welcoming audiences and sharing their work with you this May. Thank you for supporting Dorset artists and Dorset Art Weeks.
